Retailer Bonuses and Discounts for your Tax Rebate Check!

THIS IS A MUST READ!

My husband e-mailed me this great article from The Bargain Hunter blog about certain retailers who will give you bonuses and discounts for using your rebate check with them. This article also got me on the hunt for more retailers wanting those nice fat rebate checks. Here's a compilation of additional rebate bonuses:

Grocery Stores
  • Kroger: $30 bonus for every $300 in tax rebate checks exchanged for store gift cards. For example, if you have a $300 rebate can get a $330 gift card, and families with a $1,200 check can get a $1,320 gift card.
  • Supervalu, parent company of Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shop 'n Save: $30 bonus for every $300 in tax rebate checks exchanged for store gift cards. Offer will be valid through July 31.
  • Fry's Foods - $30 bonus for every $300 in tax rebate checks exchanged for store gift cards.
Major Retailers
  • Wal-Mart will cash rebate checks free of charge.
  • Home Depot is offering discounts on some of its environmentally friendly products to encourage shoppers to start going green. If you need a high-efficiency washing machine (Energy Star appliances) or compact fluorescent light bulbs, spend your dollars here.
Travel Companies
  • Holiday Inn Sunspree's Vacation is featuring an "On the Government Package" for $1,200 that includes a five-night stay for two in Virginia Beach, Va., with breakfast and dinner.
  • Check out this article from USA Today for other offers from Expedia, Monterey's Hotel Pacific, Zonder.com (vacation rental site) and more. The deals are located on the left hand side.
I also found this article from Newsweek very helpful on how to spend or invest your tax rebate check. I'll post more as soon as I discover them!

More grocery deals at Ralph's and Albertsons

I found these two great grocery deals from My Good Cents (thanks!):

Ralph's - Purex Laundry Detergent is $2.50. Use a recent $1 Sunday paper coupon, less $1 for doubling, and you'll pay just $0.49.

Albertsons - You can get a free gallon of milk (up to $4) when you buy three Malt-O-Meal Cereals, which are on sale 3 for $7.98. In this week's ad there is a coupon for a free Gallon of Milk on page 3. Combine this offer with three $1 off coupons here. Final deal= 3 bags of cereal and 1 gallon of milk for $4.98. My Good Cents also noted that this coupon can be used at other grocery stores as it is a manufacturers coupon, so be on the lookout for Malt-O-Meal cereal sales elsewhere.

Grocery Store Deals

Here are some deals from now through April 29. I only cover Vons & Ralphs because they double coupons. Also, when I mention coupons, most of them are from the Sunday newspaper unless otherwise noted. Start clipping your coupons!

Ralph's
  • Rib Eye Steaks are $3.99/lb - get your grills ready!
  • Kleenex Cottonelle toilet paper is 10 for $10. There was a .25 cent coupon in the Sunday coupons, less .25 cent double coupon = final price .50 cents each.
  • Ban Roll On Deodorant is 2 for $4; There were .40 cents and .75 cents coupons, making them .50 cents to $1.20 each.
  • Johnson Baby Care Products are $2.99; there was a $1 off coupon in the newspaper or here, less $1 for doubling= final price .99 cents.
  • Kotex tampons and pads are $2.99 less $1 newspaper coupon, less $1 for double coupon = final price .99 cents
  • General Mills cereal are 4 for $10, then you get $4 off at the register when you use your Club card. There was a $1/2 coupon, use 2 of them of $2 off, then $1 off doubling - final price is $3 (.75 cents each).
  • Bertolli Frozen Meals are $4.99, less a $2.50 coupon here , less $1 double coupon= final price $1.49
Vons
The best deal at Vons is that you can get the Arm & Hammer Detergent for .49 cents. It's on sale for $2.49, less a $2 coupon here . Just note that at some Von's they will only allow one Internet coupon, so if you want to buy multiple items, you'll have to split up the transaction or go back.

Other good deals at Vons: Air Wick Freshmatic is on sale for $5.49, less $4.00 here
or here , then $1.00 off for doubling = final price is .49 cents; Pampers is on sale for $8.99 (unadvertised) less $1 or $2 coupon in newspaper, less $1.00 off for doubling = final price is $6.99 or $5.99!

Check out the Green Stew for her deal scenarios at Vons here and for Ralph's here. Also check out the Grocery Gathering at BeCentsAble for a roundup of grocery deals in your area.

Up to 70% at Piperlime Shoes

Just received an e-mail from Piperlime about a huge sale on final clearance shoes that are up to 70%, plus an additional 15% with code PSST. Piperlime carries designer shoes and rivals other online shoe retailers like zappos.com.

All sales are final, so make sure you like what you buy (are you reading this Gemma?!). I saw some really good quality shoes by Steve Madden, Geox, Rockport, Chinese Laundry, Naturalizer, Charles David, etc. There is a broad selection of flats, heels, boots and sandals - very cute and stylish! One of the best deals I saw was a pair of Naturalizer Black Boots that were on sale for $29.97 less 15% (originally $100). I've included some pics of shoes that are on sale - the faux snakeskin flat is now $47.97 (originally $120); the tan Naturalizer sandals are now $17.97 (originally $60); green Primigi boots are $37.97 (originally $75).

Remember to use Coupon Cactus for cash back - they offer 6% for Piperlime purchases. Also, Ebates is offering 3% cash back and MyPoints is offering 4 points per (double points for April).

**ATTN SoCal Shoppers: HUGE Macy's Sale**

For you Southern California shoppers, Macy's on Lake in Pasadena is remodeling, so everything in the store (except cosmetics and perfume) is on sale. The best deals are in the Bed & Bath and Kitchen - the bedding is up to 70% - 75% off and all kitchen items are 50%. All clothing, shoes and bras are 50%. Most of the items are discounted off the regular retail, so some things may not be that great of a deal.

Head over there quickly as the sale ends in 8 days! The merchandise moves really fast - I shopped once and then came back after just 4 hours and most of the stuff that was there was gone! The deals I scored were: Martha Stewart Collection Queen Duvet Cover for $75 (originally $300 and was pleasantly surprised that it was 75% - see picture); a full-sized waterproof mattress pad from Charter Club for $21 (originally $85); and a Martha Stewart Queen bedskirt for a mere $6 (it was originally $39.99, then marked down to $19.99 less 70%!!). My sister also spent $100 on a nice blanket, two celebrity coffee mugs, Martha Stewart pillow cases and sheets.

HURRY, HURRY, HURRY!

50% off Clearance Items at The Children's Place!

The Children’s Place (TCP) – Save 50% off clearance items both in-store and online! You can also combine this offer with online coupons for 15% (use code S1A48, found on RetailMeNot.com) You can also get a printable coupon for 20% off here.

TCP clothes are great for play, and their shoes, besides being stylish, are actually very well made. I usually stock up on shoes because when they have a sale, their prices just can’t be beat. For example, some toddler shoes are $4.99 less 15%, they'll be a mere $4.24! Just note that the online prices for shoes are actually cheaper than going in the actual store, so if you were interested in buying a few pairs, go online first.

If you are buying online, make sure you go through MyPoints as you’ll get 2 points per dollar (double for the month of April). Or for cash back, go through Ebates as they’re offering 3% back. May not seem much, but every little bit adds up. (TCP is not a member of Coupon Cactus – bummer!)

Also if you like TCP, sign-up for their Place Perks Rewards program here
You will earn 1 point for every dollar spent and once you earn 75 points, they will send you a coupon for $10 off your next purchase.

Here are a few deals I saw: Casual shoes and sneakers $4.99 (see pics below); T-shirts $1.99; Hoodies $6.49; jeans $5.59.

Happy shopping!

(Follow-up: The sales are much better online than in stores. I went to one today, and there were slim pickins'!)

Make Time to Save on Groceries

Get Money Back for Online Shopping

I love online shopping. It's so convenient, easy and saves me a nerve-racking trip to the store with my child who enjoys bolting from her stroller to hide in the clothing racks. Shopping online can also save you money and make you money. Here are some tips:

Get Some Cash Back
.
Shop at websites that will actually give you cash back for shopping through them. How can they do this? Advertising, commissions - Cha ching! These sites are getting paid, so you should get paid too (so nice of them to share the wealth, no?!). Here are some suggestions:

  • Coupon Cactus - My sister-in-law told me about this website (thanks, Christine!) that not only provides online coupons and codes for thousands of online retailers, but also gives you cash back for your purchases. Most of the online stores offer cash back percentages from as little as 1% to as much as 26% (this is for E-Harmony - maybe another incentive for online daters?!). Of course, the trick is that you must always click on the Coupon Cactus website link to be eligible to receive cash back. For example, if you just click on Target.com and spend $50, that's all you get. But if you enter the Coupon Cactus website first, look for Target and click on the link, you'll receive whatever online discount is available plus 3% back on your purchase. Coupon Cactus pays you quarterly. I just started, so can't wait to see how much I'll get back!
  • Cash Crate- Cash Crate is mostly a site that pays you for completing online offers (check out at the bottom of my blog to learn more), but there is also a shopping section with a small list of about 20 retailers including Babies R Us (7%), Disney (5%), Flowers.com (20%), Magazines.com (35%), Walmart (5%) and etoys (3%). The percentages are the amounts you get get back from your purchase. For example, if you're already planning to buy a $50 bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day from Flowers.com, you'll get back $10 in your Cash Crate account. Cash Crate also claims to offer the highest percentages online for their retailers. I also like Cash Crate because it gives you money back for buying things that you may already be planning to purchase. For example, I was planning to buy photo stamps for my daughter's birthday cards. Cash Crate will pay you $10.00 for your first purchase. Thinking about signing up for Blockbuster Online or Netflix? Cash Crate pays $20.50 for signing up with Blockbuster and $12 for Netflix. Other deals that may be of interest to you include: $10 with a purchase from Let's Talk (cellular phone and accessories); $8 for signing up with Stamps.com; $11 for Columbia House DVD Membership; and $17 for Scholastics Phonics Program.

  • FatWallet - This website offers 3 great elements: 1) cash back percentages on hundreds of retailers; 2) price comparison with Pricegrabber.com; and 3) includes a forum to get the scoop on deals found by other money saving shoppers.
  • Ebates - Ebates compares their site to one giant mall with over 900 retailers. This is similar to Coupon Cactus, where you must enter their website first, then click on the online retailer.

Earn Gift Cards for Online Shopping with MyPoints.
The difference with MyPoints is that they give you points for shopping through their website, which can then be redeemed for gift cards from thousands of participating retailers. You can also earn points by just reading e-mails from their advertisers (usually 5 points), completing surveys or referrals. I've been a member for a couple of years and have already received a $50 gift card to Old Navy. And for the month of April, Mypoints is offering double points! I do love MyPoints - it's great, it's easy and you get a little something back!

Use promo or coupon codes every time you shop.
Before you order anything, check if the online store has a promotional code or coupon that you can enter. Chances are if there is a box for a promo code, there is one out there. The best site that I use is RetailMeNot.com. It features coupon codes for thousands of retailers. Just type in the name of the retailer, and it will show you a list of any available online coupons. I like this site because it also gives you comments on whether this coupon has worked for them or not. Other good sites I have used are couponcabin.com and Wow Coupons. I've also heard good things about Rather Be Shopping. It looks very organized and even has a blog. My husband likes DealNews and Deal Catcher as these have more codes for electronics. Just note that these codes cannot be used in combination with codes provided on Coupon Cactus or Ebates; however, they can be used on MyPoints.

Sign-up for e-mail newsletters and e-mail alerts from your favorite retailers. E-mail alerts are great because they give you a heads up on sales in-store and online, and most of the time give you promo/coupon codes. I subscribe to The Children's Place and almost always get a 15% coupon in the mail and via e-mail. Just recently I also received a $5 off $25 purchase at Toys R' Us.

Compare Prices.
If you want to save money, then you really need to compare prices on the products you plan to buy. There are several websites that offer price comparisons, but the ones I've found useful include: Pricegrabber, My Simon, Bizrate, Dealio and Nextag. Once you find the retailer that is offering the best deal, go through one of the websites listed above that offer cash back for your purchase. Now you've shopped, scored a great deal and will get some money back!

Any other ideas out there to share? Let me know!

Sunday Shopping

Every Sunday morning (before my sleeping beauties wake up), I like to pull out all the print ads and coupons from the newspaper and check out the sales in peace. Note: I don't post sales from Best Buy, Circuit City or other electronics stores because I'm not a technologically savvy girl. My husband is good about those sales, so maybe one day I'll ask him to write something. In the meantime, here are the best deals that you may like:

Kohls - I didn't get a print ad this AM, but did receive an e-mail alert about their "Buy One Get One" sale on clothing, shoes, towels and rugs. The B1G1 shoe sale is what really caught my eye (channeling Imelda Marcos I suppose). My sister has been wanting these shoes (see right) - on sale for $59.99 and since they come in brown, I can get a pair too! Shipping is only $5 and if you sign-up for Kohls e-mail alerts, they'll send you a $5 off coupon. And if you go through Coupon Cactus, you can get back 1.5% of your purchase.

Target - I had been wanting these little 9-cube organizers from Target, and now they are on sale for $39.99. I'll be using them to store my daughter's toys. Bathing suits are $29.99 (see left - good to hold the "girls" all in!). Gerber Graduates finger foods (puffs) and snacks are on sale for $1.89 - if you use the Gerber coupons (ranging from 50 cents to $1, see my previous post on Freebie Fridays) you can get them for as little as .89 cents. Scott bath tissue is $6.99 for a 12-pack - you can save $1 if you go to their website for a printable coupon. Bounty Paper Towels are $7 for an 8-pack - less than a $1 a roll is good to me!

JCPenney is having their annual "Buy 1 Get 1 for 88 cents" sale on junior, kids and women's apparel, shoes, sunglasses, and items for the home (towels, rugs).

Home Depot is giving out FREE reusable shopping bags (one per customer) on April 20th in honor of Earth Day. Check out the details here.

Mervyns is offering a $10 reward for every $50 you spend. You can redeem your rewards between 4/21-4/27 when you spend $25 or more.

CVS - Check out Money Saving Mom to find out this week's deal scenarios.

Got a Sunday deal to share? Let me know!

Addicted to Drugstore Shopping

In the past, I've popped in drugstores such as CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens for late-night Tylenol runs, cough medicines or the occasional candy bar craving. But once I stumbled upon one of my favorite blogs, Money Saving Mom, I have become addicted to drugstore shopping. I was hooked once I read how she spent a mere $.11 cents on diapers, lipstick, two boxes of chocolate and four air fresheners at CVS - and then earned over $20 in ECBs (Extra Credit Bucks - can be used like cash on future purchases).

With her advice, I have a closet full of shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, diapers, wipes, makeup, hairstyling products and cereal - all for FREE. I don't have to pay full price for these items like I used to at the grocery store or even Costco anymore.

Want to learn how Money Saving Mom can help you too? Learn all about her money saving strategies for CVS, Walgreens and Rite-Aid here. You'll be so glad you did!

Happy drugstore shopping!

More Gas Saving Tips

I came across this blog that has some really good tips on saving gas. Check it out here. One more tip to add is to try to park in the shade as gas evaporates.

Sunday, April 13, 2008

Welcome to my blog!

I've always been a bargain shopper. I am borderline obsessed with finding great deals everywhere I go - from grocery stores to major department stores. Since so many of my friends ask me how I find these bargains, I thought that I'd just start a blog to help others become savvy but smart shoppers. Hope you enjoy it!

Finding Money for Gas

By this summer (or even sooner), gas prices will creep up to $4 per gallon. It pains me to think about it, standing at the gas pump watching the grand total quickly tick to almost $70 to fill up. And because we live in Southern California where you must drive everywhere just to get somewhere, we may be filling up at least three to four times a month (for just one car - we have two). Do the math and that's a big chunk o' change. And when you live on one income, you need all the change you can get.

It's inevitable that gas prices are going to rise so I've been thinking about ways to find extra money for gas. Barring digging in my couch for loose change or begging on a street corner, I thought of some creative, free and easy ways to save money or earn a few dollars. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Get Cash Back for Pumping Up. If you're already spending a fortune on gas, you might as well get something back for it. With certain credit cards, you can earn rebates on gas purchases.
Chase Freedom will give you 3% cash back, while Citi Dividend Platinum Select MasterCard can earn you up to 5% cash back. Discover Card also gives you cash back on your purchases. American Express offers free miles for every purchase, which is just as good as cash for some people. But just remember to pay your credit card balances in full just as if you were using your debit card, or you'll be paying interest on already steeped gas prices.

2) Earn Points, Get Free Gas Cards. On Mypoints.com, you can earn free gas cards from Shell ranging from $10 to $50. Mypoints.com is a website that rewards you with a certain amount of points for online purchases from select retailers (e.g. Target, Old Navy, etc.) as well as participation in online surveys, games, reading e-mails and more. In turn, you can redeem points for rewards from more than 100 merchants (including Shell). If you're an avid Internet shopper, this is a great deal.

3) Enter Free Gas Giveaways or Promotions. Check out your local radio station for free gas giveaways. For example in Southern California, you can enter for a chance to win $50 worth of free gas from Movin' 93.9 by registering on their website www.movin939.com/contests/freegas.aspx. Also, Big Bear Lake Resort Association (BBLRA) is offering a free $100 gas card for guests booking five or more nights at a participating lodge, or a free $50 gas card for guests booking a three or four nights stay at a participating lodge. The free gas offer begins April 20, 2008 and ends November 23, 2008 (non-holiday).

4)
Clip coupons. Saving 35 cents here or 50 cents there may not seem much, but it does add up especially on items you normally buy. Check the Sunday newspaper for current coupons, or take a look at these online sources: www.boodle.com, www.smartsource.com, www.couponbug.com If you have an aversion to scissors, then check out your local grocery store online to see if they offer P&GeSaver, which loads coupons onto your club card.

5) Save Money with Fellow Bloggers. I stumbled upon Money Saving Mom, an awesome blog that offers incredible and creative tips and ideas on saving at grocery stores, drugstores, retailers and more! From this website, I have learned how to score major deals at CVS (e.g. on my last trip I spent a mere $5.16 on two packages of Huggies Pullups, 6 Sunsilk shampoos, 3 Johnson & Johnson Baby Lotions, 1 bottle of Excedrin, 1 gallon of milk and 3 toe dividers) as well as get free samples from retailers such as Starbucks. She also provides information on how to earn extra money without getting another job (see her March post Increasing your income without getting a new job). I also like BeCentsAble - this site offers a weekly section called "The Grocery Gathering" which lists some great blogs covering individual grocery store deals. Always be on the lookout for money saving blogs - every little bit of knowledge can help put more green in your wallet!

5) Recycle. Save your aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass for some easy cash. On my last trip to the recycling center, I earned $15 for just bringing in plastic water bottles, milk cartons and glass. Currently I think you can get at least $1.75 a pound for aluminum cans. It may take a while to start up a collection, but you'll be doing something good for your pocket and for the environment too.

6) Drink one less latte. Try living without Starbucks (or Coffee Bean) for just one day. If you do this, you'll save about $12 (or more if you're a Venti drinker) per week or almost $48 a month.

7) Brown bag your lunch. You could possibly save $5-$7 a day if you brown bag it. That's a savings of $25 to $35 per week - equivalent to a 1/2 or 3/4 tank of gas, depending on your car!

8) Sell on Ebay or Craigslist. Take a look around your home and see if there is anything you don't use anymore that could possibly turn into some cash on Ebay or Craigslist. Many people have success selling the following: vintage concert T-shirts, sports team clothing, designer brand purses, and collectibles like figurines or commemorative plates. But do your research first - check your items to see how much they fare on Ebay or Craigslist to make sure you 'll turn a profit.

Those are my top 8 ideas - if you have an idea, please share in the comments section!
